# Fix Purchase Analysis & Advice Clipping - Dev Log

**Date:** 2026-02-11
**Task:** Investigate and fix the issue where "Purchase Analysis & Advice" content was being clipped (truncated) mid-sentence.

## Overview
The user reported that the AI-generated advice in the deal details overlay was consistently cutting off, leaving sentences incomplete (e.g., "...often more for textbooks"). This issue affected the usability and professional appearance of the feature.

## Investigation & Challenges
- **Root Cause:** The `generate_ava_advice` function in `keepa_deals/ava_advisor.py` was calling the xAI API (Grok-4-Fast-Reasoning) with a `max_tokens` limit of **150**.
- **Impact:** 150 tokens corresponds to roughly 110-120 words. The model's natural response length for a detailed analysis often exceeded this, causing the API to hard-truncate the response.
- **Formatting Issues:** The model was occasionally outputting Markdown (e.g., `**bold**`) despite instructions, which does not render correctly in the `innerHTML` container used by the frontend.
- **UX Challenge:** The user requested that the advice be both detailed *and* concise (compressed to ~150-180 words) to fit the UI, or alternatively, that the UI handle longer text gracefully.

## Solution Implemented

### 1. Backend Updates (`keepa_deals/ava_advisor.py`)
- **Token Limit:** Increased `max_tokens` from `150` to `1000`. This provides ample buffer for the model to complete its thought process without artificial truncation.
- **Prompt Engineering:**
    - Updated the system prompt to **strictly enforce HTML formatting** (e.g., `<b>`, `<br>`, `<p>`) and explicitly forbid Markdown.
    - Added a goal constraint: *"Provide a dense, high-quality analysis in approximately 150-180 words."* This guides the model to be concise by design, rather than by truncation.

### 2. Frontend Updates (`static/global.css`)
- **Scrollable Container:** Modified the `.ava-advice-container` class to include:
  ```css
  max-height: 250px;
  overflow-y: auto;
  ```
  This ensures that if the advice text *does* exceed the target length (or if the screen is small), the container preserves the layout and allows the user to scroll to read the full content.

## Verification
- A reproduction script (`reproduce_clipping.py`) was created using mock deal data to test the API response.
- **Result:** The API returned a complete, well-formatted HTML response of approximately 118 words, falling perfectly within the desired range and ending with a proper closing sentence.
- The script was removed after verification.

## Status
**Successful.** The advice content is no longer clipped, the formatting is consistent with the UI, and the interface now handles variable text lengths gracefully.
