# Dev Log: Dashboard Filters, Reset Logic & Count Accuracy

**Date:** December 2025
**Task:** Add Advanced Filters, Fix Reset Functionality, and Correct "New Deals" Counter
**Status:** **Success**

### 1. Overview
The objective was to enhance the Deals Dashboard with granular filtering capabilities (Profit Trust, Seller Trust, Min $ Profit, Below Avg %) while removing the legacy keyword search. A critical requirement was fixing a persistent bug where the "Reset" button failed to fully revert the view to its default state. Additionally, the "New Deals Found" notification was identified as inaccurate because it reported the total sourced deals rather than the number of new deals matching the user's active filters.

### 2. Challenges & Analysis

#### A. The "Reset" Ambiguity
-   **Problem:** Initially, resetting a filter (e.g., Min Margin) to "0%" resulted in the backend receiving `margin_gte=0`. The backend interpreted this as "Show deals where Margin >= 0". While logically sound, this excluded deals with negative margins (loss leaders), whereas the true "unfiltered" state should show *everything*.
-   **Impact:** The "Reset" button would clear the UI slider but the data grid would remain partially filtered, confusing the user.

#### B. The "New Deals" Counter Discrepancy
-   **Problem:** The dashboard polls `/api/deal-count` to detect new data. However, this endpoint was unaware of the active filters on the frontend.
-   **Impact:** If a user filtered for "High Profit" deals, the counter would still notify them of "1,000 New Deals" (mostly low profit junk), creating noise and mistrust in the notification system.

#### C. Browser Caching
-   **Problem:** Even after fixing the logic, the browser would sometimes serve a cached response for the default URL (e.g., `/api/deals?page=1`), preventing the grid from refreshing immediately after a reset.

### 3. Solutions Implemented

#### A. "Any" State Logic (Frontend & Backend)
We moved away from arbitrary defaults (like "Profit defaults to $1") to a standardized **"Any"** state for all sliders.

1.  **Frontend (`dashboard.html`):**
    *   All new sliders (Profit Trust, Seller Trust, Profit $, Percent Down) now start at `0`.
    *   The UI explicitly labels `0` as **"Any"**.
    *   The `getFilters()` function was rewritten to **conditionally omit** parameters from the API request if their value is `0` (or the specific default for that field).
        *   *Result:* Sending no parameter means "No `WHERE` clause" in SQL, effectively returning all records (including NULLs and negatives).

2.  **Backend (`wsgi_handler.py`):**
    *   Updated `api_deals` and `deal_count` to accept the new parameters: `profit_confidence_gte`, `seller_trust_gte`, `profit_gte`, `percent_down_gte`.
    *   Added logic to strictly ignore these parameters if the received value is `0`, serving as a double-safety check against the "Reset" bug.
    *   **Seller Trust Logic:** Implemented a conversion where the user input (0-100) is divided by 20.0 to match the database's 0-5 scale.

#### B. Synchronized "New Deals" Counter
-   **Logic Fix:** The frontend polling function now calls `getFilters()` to retrieve the *exact* same active filters used for the main table.
-   **API Update:** The `/api/deal-count` endpoint was refactored to parse these filters and construct the exact same SQL `WHERE` clauses as the main data endpoint.
-   **Result:** The "New Deals" notification now strictly reflects the user's current view context.

#### C. Robust Reset Handler
-   Replaced the standard HTML `<button type="reset">` behavior with a custom JavaScript handler.
-   **Mechanism:**
    1.  Prevents default form submission.
    2.  Manually sets every slider HTML element to `0` (or its specific default).
    3.  Manually updates every display `<span>` to "Any" or "∞".
    4.  Manually resets internal state variables (`currentSort`, `currentPage`).
    5.  Triggers a fresh `fetchDeals()` call.

#### D. Cache Busting
-   Appended a timestamp parameter `&_t=${new Date().getTime()}` to every API request (deals and counts). This forces the browser to bypass its cache and fetch fresh data from the server every time.

### 4. Technical Artifacts

-   **Files Modified:**
    -   `wsgi_handler.py`: Added filter parsing logic to `api_deals` and `deal_count`.
    -   `templates/dashboard.html`: Implemented new UI controls, "Any" logic, manual reset handler, and cache-busting.
-   **New Features:**
    -   Profit Trust Filter (0-100%)
    -   Seller Trust Filter (0-100%)
    -   Min $ Profit Filter ($0-$100+)
    -   Below Avg % Filter (0-100%)

### 5. Outcome
The task was successful. The dashboard now supports advanced filtering with a consistent and reliable user experience. The "Reset" button functions as a true "Clear All" command, and the notification system provides accurate, context-aware updates.
