## Dev Log Entry: Auto-Formatting and Truncation for Binding Column

**Date:** December 31, 2025 **Task ID:** `feature/binding-formatting` **Status:** Successful

### 1. Task Overview

The objective was to replace the manual, hardcoded "Binding" abbreviation map in the backend with a dynamic, automated formatting solution. The requirements were:

- **Data Formatting:** Automatically convert raw database values (e.g., `mass_market`, `sheet-music`) into readable Title Case strings (e.g., "Mass Market", "Sheet Music") by replacing underscores and hyphens with spaces.
- **UI Constraints:** Limit the visual width of the "Binding" column in the dashboard to **95px**.
- **User Experience:** Truncate text that exceeds the width with an ellipsis (`...`) and provide a hover tooltip displaying the full text, matching the existing style of other columns (like Title).

### 2. Implementation Details

#### Backend (`wsgi_handler.py`)

- **Modification:** Removed the `binding_map` dictionary in the `api_deals` function.

- New Logic:

  Implemented dynamic string transformation within the deal processing loop:

  ```
  # Automatic formatting for Binding: remove underscores/hyphens, title case
  if 'Binding' in deal and deal['Binding']:
      deal['Binding'] = str(deal['Binding']).replace('_', ' ').replace('-', ' ').title()
  ```

- **Benefit:** This eliminates the need to manually update a mapping dictionary for every new binding type encountered (e.g., "Library Binding", "Audio CD").

#### Frontend (`templates/dashboard.html`)

- **Modification:** Updated the `renderTable` JavaScript function to handle the 'Binding' column separately from 'Condition'.

- New Logic:

  Applied a dedicated CSS class

  ```
  .binding-cell
  ```

  to the table cell:

  ```
  } else if (col === 'Binding') {
      table += `<td class="binding-cell"><span>${value}</span></td>`;
  }
  ```

#### Styling (`static/global.css`)

- **Modification:** Defined the `.binding-cell` class to enforce width constraints and handle the hover effect entirely via CSS (avoiding complex JS event listeners).

- CSS Rules:

  ```
  .binding-cell {
      max-width: 95px;
      overflow: hidden;
      text-overflow: ellipsis;
      position: relative;
  }
  /* Hover effect to reveal full text */
  .binding-cell:hover {
      overflow: visible;
  }
  .deal-row:hover .binding-cell:hover span {
      position: relative;
      background-color: #011b2a;
      z-index: 10;
      box-shadow: 0 2px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);
      padding: 2px 5px;
      white-space: nowrap;
  }
  ```

### 3. Challenges Faced & Solutions

- **Challenge 1: Verification Environment Setup**
  - **Issue:** The verification script failed initially because `flask` and other dependencies were not installed in the fresh bash session, preventing the local server from starting.
  - **Resolution:** Installed dependencies via `pip install -r requirements.txt` before running the verification suite.
- **Challenge 2: UI Interaction in Playwright**
  - **Issue:** The Playwright verification script timed out trying to fill the login form. The login form is hidden by default inside a toggleable container (`.login-container`), which requires a user action to reveal.
  - **Resolution:** Updated the verification script to explicitly click the "Log In" toggle button (`page.click('button.login-button')`) before attempting to fill credentials.
- **Challenge 3: CSS Specificity**
  - **Issue:** Ensuring the hover tooltip appeared *above* adjacent cells without layout shifting.
  - **Resolution:** Used `position: relative` on the parent cell and `z-index: 10` on the span, combined with `overflow: visible` on hover. This mimics the existing "Title" column behavior seamlessly.

### 4. Verification Results

- **Unit Testing:** A temporary script `verify_binding.py` confirmed that inputs like `library_binding`, `mass-market`, and `audio_cd` correctly transformed to "Library Binding", "Mass Market", and "Audio Cd".
- **Frontend Verification:** A Playwright script (`verification/verify_frontend.py`) captured screenshots confirming that the column width was constrained to 95px and that the text "Library Binding" was correctly displayed (and truncated where necessary).

### 5. Deployment Instructions

To deploy these changes:

1. Pull the latest code (including `wsgi_handler.py`, `templates/dashboard.html`, and `static/global.css`).
2. Run `touch wsgi.py` to trigger a reload of the WSGI application server (handling the Python code changes).
3. Users may need to hard-refresh their browser (Ctrl+F5) to load the updated `global.css` file immediately.
