# Dev Log Entry - Dashboard UI Cleanup & Column Removal

## Task Overview

The objective was to declutter the "Deals Dashboard" by removing several specific columns from the frontend view while strictly preserving their underlying backend logic and data extraction for future use. Additionally, the "Gated" and "Buy" action columns were to be relocated to the "Profit Estimates" section, and the "Actions" group header was to be removed.

## Implementation Details

### Frontend (`templates/dashboard.html`)

- **Column Removal:** Modified the `columnsToShow` JavaScript array to remove the following keys: `Categories_Sub` (Genre), `Binding`, `Sales_Rank_365_days_avg`, `Sells`, `Seller` (Name), `Min_Listing_Price`, and `List_at`.

- **Column Reorganization:** Moved `Gated` and `Buy_Now` keys from the end of the array to immediately follow `Profit_Confidence`.

- Header Structure:

  - Removed the `<th>` tags for the "Actions" group header.

  - Updated

    ```
    colspan
    ```

    attributes for the remaining group headers to match the new column counts:

    - "Book Details": 3
    - "Sales Rank & Seasonality": 4
    - "Seller Details": 1
    - "Deal Details & Current Best Price": 5
    - "Profit Estimates & Recommended Listing Price": 6

### Documentation

- **`Documentation/Dashboard_Specification.md`:** Updated the "Main Data Grid" table to remove the rows corresponding to the hidden columns and relocated the "Gated" and "Buy" rows. Added a note clarifying that the logic for these columns persists in the backend.
- **`Documentation/Feature_Deals_Dashboard.md`:** Fixed a broken file path reference to the specification document.

## Challenges & Solutions

### 1. Verification without GUI

- **Challenge:** Verifying complex table structure changes (merged headers, column ordering) is difficult in a headless sandbox environment without direct visual access.

- Solution:

  Implemented a two-stage verification process:

  1. **Static Analysis:** Created a regex-based Python script (`verify_dashboard_columns.py`) to parse the HTML template and extract the `columnsToShow` array and `colspan` values, ensuring the code structure was correct.
  2. **Visual Verification:** Wrote a Playwright script (`verify_dashboard.py`) that launched the application, logged in using test credentials, navigated to the dashboard, and captured a screenshot. This allowed for visual confirmation that the table headers aligned correctly with the data columns.

### 2. Authentication for Testing

- **Challenge:** The dashboard is protected by a login route. The Playwright script initially failed because it could not access the protected page.
- **Solution:** Identified the `tester` credentials in `wsgi_handler.py` and updated the Playwright script to simulate a user login flow (clicking the toggle button, filling the form) before verifying the dashboard.

## Status

- **Outcome:** Successful.
- **Verification:** The Playwright screenshot confirmed that the "Genre", "Binding", and other requested columns are gone, the "Actions" header is removed, and the "Gated"/"Buy" icons are correctly positioned in the "Profit Estimates" section. Code review confirmed no backend logic was deleted.
