# Dev Log: Dashboard Data Formatting Updates

**Date:** 2026-01-08
**Task:** Dashboard UI Data Formatting Updates
**Status:** Success

## Overview
The objective was to update the frontend formatting of specific data columns in the dashboard (`templates/dashboard.html`) to improve readability and standardize presentation.
Specific requirements included:
- **Condition:** Normalize raw values. Specifically, map "N" to "New", and format others with prefixes (e.g., "U - Like New", "C - Very Good").
- **Rank:** Condense large numbers (e.g., 4,500,000 → 4.5M, 120,000 → 120k).
- **Ago:** Shorten time strings (e.g., "4 days ago" → "4d") while preserving trend arrows (e.g., "⇧ 4d").

## Challenges
1. **"N" vs "New" Display Bug:**
    - The initial implementation of `formatCondition` relied on `lower.startsWith('new')`. However, the raw data for new items was often just "N" (case-insensitive), causing them to fall through to the default fallback or remain formatted incorrectly.
    - **Fix:** Explicitly checked `lower === 'n'` in the formatting logic.

2.  **Deployment & Caching:**
    - After applying changes to `templates/dashboard.html`, the user reported seeing old formatting.
    - **Root Cause:** The production WSGI server (Apache/Flask) caches templates.
    - **Resolution:** Executing `touch wsgi.py` forced the server to reload the application and serve the updated templates.

3.  **Verification Script Flakiness:**
    - During verification, `reproduce_app.py` initially failed to verify the "N" fix because the patch applied via `replace_with_git_merge_diff` silently failed or was misapplied in a subsequent step.
    - **Resolution:** Re-verified the file content using `grep`, confirmed the missing logic, and re-applied the patch strictly.

## Actions Taken
-   **Implemented `formatCondition(value)`:**
    -   Handles "N" → "New".
    - Detects "Used"/"Collectible" and standard suffixes ("Like New", "Good", etc.).
    - Returns normalized strings like "U - Good".
-   **Implemented `formatSalesRank(num)`:**
    -   Returns "X.YM" for values >= 1,000,000.
    -   Returns "Xk" for values >= 1,000.
-   **Implemented `formatTimeAgo(dateString)`:**
    -   Parses ISO and "MM/DD/YY HH:MM" dates.
    -   Calculates time difference and returns compact strings ("1m", "4h", "2d", "1y").
-   **Verified with Playwright:**
    - Created `verification/reproduce_app.py` (Mock Flask app) and `verification/verify_dashboard.py`.
    - Confirmed correct rendering of "New" (from "N"), "4.5M" (Rank), and Time formatting.

## Outcome
The task was successful. The dashboard now correctly displays standardized conditions, condensed ranks, and short time formats. The "N" display bug is resolved.

## Key Learnings
- **Touch `wsgi.py`:** Always touch `wsgi.py` after modifying templates or python code in this production environment to ensure changes take effect immediately.
- **Explicit Logic:** When normalizing data, always check for exact short codes (like "N") in addition to full words ("New").
