# Dashboard UI Spacing Adjustment Attempt

**Date:** 2026-01-19
**Status:** Failed / Reverted

## Overview
The goal was to adjust the vertical spacing and dimensions of the Deals Dashboard header elements to match a strict pixel-perfect specification provided by the user.

**Requirements:**
- **Group Header Row:** Height reduced to 32px.
- **Filter Panel (Closed):** Height increased to 43px.
- **Spacing:**
  - 24px between the bottom of the Filter Panel and the top of the Group Header text.
  - ~18px between the bottom of the Group Header text and the top of the Column Header Row.
  - Total vertical space of 56px occupied by the gap and the Group Header.

## Actions Taken
1. **CSS Refactoring (`static/global.css`):**
    - Modified `#deals-table` to remove `border-spacing` and `border-collapse` from the wrapper div.
    - Targeted the inner table specifically (`#deals-table table`) to apply `border-spacing: 0` and `border-collapse: separate`.
    - Applied `height: 32px !important` to the Group Header Row (`tr` and `th`).
    - Applied `margin-top: 24px` to the table container.
    - Forced `vertical-align: top !important`, `padding-top: 0 !important`, and `line-height: 1 !important` on the Group Header `th` elements to position text at the exact top edge.

2. **Verification:**
    - Implemented a Playwright script to verify computed styles.
    - Logs confirmed:
        - `tableDivMarginTop: 24px`
        - `groupHeaderHeight: 32px`
        - `tableBorderSpacing: 0px`
    - Mathematical verification: 32px row - ~15px text = 17px space below (close to 18px target). 24px margin = 24px space above.

## Challenges & Issues
- **No Visual Effect:** Despite the computed styles appearing correct in the headless environment, the user reported that the changes had "no effect" on the actual rendered UI.
- **Potential Causes:**
    - **Caching:** The browser might be holding onto a cached version of `global.css` (timestamp query param on the link tag might be needed).
    - **Specificity/Inheritance:** Deeper conflicts with the "Floating Row" implementation (which uses `border-spacing: 0 8px`) might be overriding the new rules in ways not captured by the simple computed style check.
    - **Structure:** The interaction between the wrapper div and the table element regarding margins and collapsing borders can be fragile.

## Outcome
The task was unsuccessful. To maintain a clean codebase, the CSS changes were reverted. Future attempts should investigate:
1. Browser caching mechanisms (ensure the CSS is actually reloading).
2. The exact DOM structure of the "Floating Row" implementation to ensure spacing modifications don't silently fail or break the row separation for data rows.
