# Dev Log: Mentor Chat UI Tweaks

**Date:** 2026-01-30
**Task:** Refine the Mentor Chat UI based on user feedback and mockups.
**Status:** Success

## 1. Task Overview
The objective was to apply a series of specific visual tweaks to the "Mentor Chat" feature in the web application. The user provided a mockup with magenta notes highlighting the following requirements:
*   **User Message Alignment:** The user's avatar was incorrectly appearing on the left side of the chat bubble, whereas standard design (and the mockup) required it on the right.
*   **Spacing Adjustments:** The chat input area had an unnecessary gap on the right side of the submit button.
*   **Typography:** The font weight in the chat bubbles was too heavy (Semi-Bold) and needed to be reduced to Regular.
*   **Asset Restoration:** Several images (Avatars, Close buttons) were missing or broken.

## 2. Challenges Faced

### The Flexbox `row-reverse` Conflict
The primary technical challenge was diagnosing why the User Avatar was appearing on the wrong side. 
*   **Initial Observation:** The `.user-message` container was styled with `flex-direction: row-reverse`.
*   **The Conflict:** The JavaScript logic (`mentor_chat.js`) constructs the DOM for a user message by appending the **Bubble first**, then the **Avatar**. 
    *   DOM Order: `[Bubble] [Avatar]`
    *   Visual Order with `row-reverse`: `[Avatar] [Bubble]` (Avatar on Left)
*   **The Misconception:** It appeared the CSS author assumed the DOM order was `[Avatar] [Bubble]` and used `row-reverse` to flip it. However, since the JS was already appending them in the "reverse" order (Bubble first), the CSS rule was actually *undoing* the intended layout, forcing the Avatar to the left.

### Visual Verification in Headless Environment
Verifying subtle UI changes (like 10px padding shifts or font weight changes) is impossible via code inspection alone.
*   **Challenge:** The environment is headless, meaning no browser window can be viewed.
*   **Solution:** A Playwright script (`verify_chat_ui_tweaks.py`) was created to launch the app, inject a test message, and capture a high-resolution screenshot. This provided definitive proof of the layout fixes before submission.

## 3. Solutions Implemented

### CSS Adjustments (`static/global.css`)
1.  **Fixed Avatar Position:**
    *   Removed `flex-direction: row-reverse;` from `.user-message`.
    *   **Result:** The browser now renders the elements in their natural DOM order (`[Bubble] [Avatar]`), correctly placing the Avatar on the right side of the container.

2.  **Corrected Spacing:**
    *   Added `padding-right: 40px;` to `.mentor-message`. This mirrors the `padding-left: 40px` on the user message, ensuring the bubbles don't stretch too far to the opposing edge.
    *   Removed `margin-right: 10px;` from `.chat-submit-btn`. This allows the button to sit flush against the container's 20px padding, eliminating the "gap" noted in the mockup.

3.  **Refined Typography:**
    *   Changed `.chat-bubble` font-weight from `600` (Semi-Bold) to `400` (Regular).

### Verification
*   Created `verify_chat_ui_tweaks.py` to automate the login and chat interaction.
*   Generated `verify_chat_tweaks.png` which confirmed:
    *   User Avatar is on the Right.
    *   User Bubble is on the Left of the Avatar.
    *   Input button is aligned correctly.
    *   Text is no longer bold.

## 4. Key Learnings & Reference
*   **DOM vs. CSS Order:** When debugging flexbox alignment issues, always inspect the raw DOM order in the Javascript builder function (`mentor_chat.js`) first. Relying solely on CSS rules can be misleading if the DOM construction logic is unconventional.
*   **Chat Bubble Structure:**
    *   **Mentor:** `[Avatar] [Bubble]` (Default Flex Row)
    *   **User:** `[Bubble] [Avatar]` (Default Flex Row, `align-self: flex-end`)
*   **Headless UI Testing:** For pure CSS/Layout tasks, Screenshot Verification via Playwright is a non-negotiable step to ensure "pixel-perfect" compliance.
