# Purchase Analysis & Advice and Mentor UI Updates - Dev Log

**Task:** Revise the presentation of the "Purchase Analysis & Advice" panel and update the "Mentor Chat" UI text.
**Status:** Success

## 1. Overview
The user requested two primary sets of changes:
1.  **Purchase Analysis & Advice (Deal Details Overlay):** The AI-generated advice text needed to be formatted as plain text paragraphs, explicitly removing conversational introductions (e.g., "Hi, I'm...") and markdown formatting (bolding, headers), which were rendering poorly in the UI.
2.  **Mentor Chat UI:**
    *   Change the top navigation link from "Mentor" to "My Mentor".
    *   Update the introductory bio text for all four mentor personas (Olyvia, Joel, Evelyn, Errol) in the Chat panel to specific "Resume style" descriptions.

## 2. Challenges Faced

### Scoping the AI Prompt Changes
A critical requirement was to "NOT modify the chat feature from the top nav Mentor link" while changing the advice text.
*   **Challenge:** Both features use the `ava_advisor.py` module to interact with the LLM.
*   **Resolution:** We identified that `generate_ava_advice` is the specific function used for the Deal Details overlay, whereas the chat likely uses a different entry point or context. By applying the prompt constraints (No Markdown, No Intros) *only* within `generate_ava_advice`, we successfully isolated the changes to the requested feature without affecting the conversational nature of the main Mentor Chat.

### UI Alignment & Text Length
*   **Challenge:** The initial text provided for the Olyvia persona was too long, pushing the "Choose Your Mentor" selection icons out of alignment in the Chat UI.
*   **Resolution:** We iteratively revised the text, shortening Olyvia's bio to: *"Olivia is a seasoned financial advisor specializing in online arbitrage and Amazon scaling. She excels at identifying high-margin, low-risk opportunities while fiercely protecting capital and minimizing exposure."* This maintained the layout integrity.

## 3. Technical Implementation

### A. Prompt Engineering (`keepa_deals/ava_advisor.py`)
We modified the prompt construction in `generate_ava_advice`:
1.  **Removed Intro Injection:** Removed the line `{mentor['intro']}` from the prompt to stop the AI from greeting the user.
2.  **Added Constraints:**
    *   `* **Constraint:** Do NOT start with an introduction. Jump straight into the analysis.`
    *   `* **Constraint:** Do NOT use markdown formatting (no bolding, no headers, no bullet points). Use plain text paragraphs only.`

### B. Frontend Updates
1.  **Navigation (`templates/layout.html`):** Updated the link text to `<span>My Mentor</span>`.
2.  **Chat Bios (`static/js/mentor_chat.js`):** Updated the `MENTORS` object configuration with the new "Resume style" text for all four personas.

## 4. Verification
*   **Prompt Verification:** Created `tests/verify_ava_prompt.py`, which mocks the xAI API call and asserts that the generated prompt contains the new constraints and lacks the intro text.
*   **UI Text Verification:** Created `tests/verify_ui_text_updates.py` to parse the HTML and JS files and verify that the exact requested strings were present.

## 5. Conclusion
The task was successfully completed. The Purchase Analysis panel now delivers clean, direct, plain-text advice, and the Mentor Chat UI reflects the updated branding and persona descriptions requested by the user.
